In our top five picks today we focus on the skid-steer loader and kind of proper handling that can ensure that it boosts productivity and remains dependable. We’ll share with you some of our top tips for attachments, tire pressure, harsh weather conditions, cooling systems, and cleaning. Now while these tips are not exhaustive they cover some of the key areas you can focus on to ensure you operate much more efficiently.
1. Use the Recommended Attachments
Attachments usually enhance how much you can do with your skid- steer loader. However, not every attachment that fits your skid-steer loader should be used because it can create room for overloading. You need to ensure the attachments are the right size as per manufacturer recommendations to avoid applying excess pressure on the lift arm cylinders through overloading. This eventually exposes operators to the risk of tipping over leading to unnecessary injuries. Also ensure the attachments, especially when hired, are properly serviced to improve efficiency and avoid contamination.
2. Optimal Tire Pressure or Track Tension
Just like it is for forklifts, tire pressure and track tension is very important for the efficient operation of a skid-steer loader. If you let the track tension to become too loose then you run the risk of accelerating the wear and tear of the tires. On the other hand if you let the track tension become too tight then the under-carriage of the skid steer loader will wear off very fast. In case you are using OTR Tires, optimal tire pressure is also key to ensure the operator is comfortable and the skid steer loader is stable limiting any possible damage.
3. Maintenance for Different Weather Conditions.
If you happen to use the skid-steer loader in harsh weather conditions then you need to ensure that you are providing it with the right care. For instance, in cold weather check the anti-freeze and washer fluid to ensure it is filled and not frozen. You should also make use of an engine pre-heater system to keep the engine warmed up for efficiency. While it is important you use much thinner oil for engine lubrication in cold conditions when it becomes hotter weather you should shift to using thicker oil.
4. Regular Cooling System Checks
Your skid-steer loader‘s cooling system is also key to ensuring that it works as required. Always ensure that the glycol percentage is perfect such that the cooling system can achieve both the freezing and boiling point effortlessly. Testing can always be done using the alkalinity swab test or checking coolant glycol percentage. Malfunctions in the cooling system can also be detected using compressed air: when the flow of air is seamless then it is functioning properly.
5. Consistent Cleaning Routine.
In most cases maintaining a regular cleaning routine can save you a lot of dollars when it comes to maintenance. For instance debris normally gets stuck on the tracks and when this is not removed it makes the skid-steer loader tires to wear out quickly. Something else to note is that when the tracks are full of debri they make the machine less efficient as it needs more fuel and power for optimal performance. Therefore make sure you have a dedicated routine to ensure it is cleaned every day after use.
However note that depending on the kind of use you subject your skid-steer loader to you mind need to do more to guarantee its efficiency. Let us know your experience, what usually works for you?
